Rashmi: October Story of Empowerment

Meet Rashmi, our October 2022 Story of Empowerment. Rashmi is a student at our tailoring center in Balangir, Odisha. She is from the Beherapali village in Balangir and lives with her husband, who paints buildings for a living. She stays at home to manage the house and take care of the rest of their family members. Rashmi’s husband is the only earning member of the family, so it is very difficult for them to manage even basic living expenses. 

Upon hearing about the OLM tailoring classes from a friend of hers, Rashmi was eager to learn how to tailor to help provide for her family. Her husband and mother-in-law were also very excited for Rashmi to become a financially independent woman. According to Rashmi, not many people get access to this kind of facility, so she was really thankful that this opportunity was presented to her. She says that she really likes attending the classes and feels happy now that she knows how to stitch. 

It’s been over two months since Rashmi started attending the tailoring classes, and she says that she is very happy and proud to be part of the OLM tailoring center. The community has also played a major role in this experience for her, too, and she has loved the feeling of being part of the OLM tailoring community of women.
